“These people are beasts, not Muslims”

The news of terrorists attacking a Spanish restaurant in Gulshan shocked the entire country on the holy day of Ramadan’s last Friday.
As the drama on Road 79 of the upmarket area of Gulshan unfolded, people throughout the country were, in total disbelief, glued to their TV sets throughout the night. National and international news channels broadcasted the bloody event of Gulshan live, around the world.
“These people (attackers) cannot be Muslims, they are worse than beasts,” said a rickshaw puller as he watched the coverage on a shopping mall TV screen on Saturday morning with a dozen other passersby. Instantly, everyone in the small group of people said in unison, “you are quite right, brother.”
As the operation “Thunderbolt” by the 100 commandoes of the Bangladesh armed forces was declared complete, the horrific picture of brutalities emerged. During the night, the terrorists had slaughtered 20 innocent souls. Two top police officials were killed and many others were injured, some critically. Six terrorists were killed in the gunfight and a suspect was caught alive. Speculations were rife that the terrorists might have thrown some bodies into the lake by the Holey Artisan Bakery premises.
Maulana Mohammad Mahtab watched the events of the Saturday morning. He said that he and the entire neighborhood of Shukrabad, where he teaches the Quran, were shocked.
“I cannot believe these terrorists are using Islam to justify this heinous act of killing innocent people, neither can I believe these people are Bangalees,” he said adding that Islam never allows such barbaric act of violence.
A fish vendor at Shukrabad kitchen market, Mohammad Zamir Mia said all his colleagues and many customers in the market were shocked to learn about the loss of lives.
“They (foreign nationals) are our guests, how can someone kill them?” he continued, “How can they kill their innocent fellow Bangalees? This act of killing is forbidden in our religion,” Zamir said, adding, “I think this is a conspiracy to destroy our business.”
A CNG driver based in Mohammadpur, Mohammad Lal Mia said he had never heard of such an attack in his lifetime.
“They (the government) should hang the people who did this to our country, these are beasts, not humans,” Lal said.
People from different walks of life strongly condemned these unprecedented violent events that may forever be rooted in the history of this city.
